Once it is redacted, it is redacted.

Docket gives legal, compliance, and records teams one platform to view, redact, search, and release documents. Every page is OCR-indexed, every PII field is flagged, and every action is written to an audit log.

The document lifecycle

How a file moves through Docket

From the moment a file is uploaded to the moment it is released, a document passes through three stages, each enforced server-side rather than hidden in the interface.

Stage 1

Ingest & analyze

Upload

Upload a scanned file or a native PDF, and processing begins automatically.

AI-powered OCR

Every page is recognized and indexed automatically, in real time or on a background queue.

AI-assisted PII detection

SSNs, emails, phone numbers, names, and more are flagged automatically across 8 categories the moment text is extracted.

Metadata

Document metadata is captured on ingest and stays editable alongside the file.

Stage 2

Search & redact

Viewing

Pages render true to scale from 50 to 300% zoom, staying sharp at every level with no blurring.

Search

Full-text search across one document or an entire repository, scoped to what each user is authorized to see.

Redact & burn

Act on an AI-flagged field with one click, or draw a box around any other area, then burn it permanently into the file.

Page operations

Rotate, reorder, delete, append, and merge pages without leaving the viewer.

Stage 3

Govern & release

Export

Download, print, or email with time-limited links, never a permanent public URL.

Access control

Role-based permissions resolved from your identity provider and enforced server-side.

Audit trail

Every view, edit, redaction, and export is written to an immutable audit log.

Deployment

Deploy self-hosted or in the cloud, running on your own infrastructure, storage, and database.

Expungement

When a legal hold expires or a retention period ends, a file and everything derived from it, including extracted text, PII findings, and annotations, can be permanently destroyed, with a permanent audit record confirming the action.

Ask Docket

An assistant that proposes. You confirm.

Ask questions about a document, direct redaction in plain language, or get an explanation for why something was flagged. Docket's assistant works only from what is already indexed and never burns a redaction without your explicit approval.

Document Q&A

Ask questions about a file or a whole repository; every answer cites the page it came from and respects your access permissions.

Smart redaction

Direct redaction in plain language. The assistant proposes boxes from existing PII findings, but nothing burns until you confirm.

PII explainer

For any flagged field, see which detector fired and why. Review becomes a conversation, not a static list.

Product guidance

Ask "how do I" questions about Docket itself, answered from the platform's own feature set.

Built to pass audit

Security teams read this part first.

Docket is designed to satisfy the people who must approve where documents live and who can access them, not just the people using it day to day.

  • An immutable audit log records every read, edit, redaction, and export.
  • Role-based permissions are enforced server-side, resolved from your identity provider's groups and roles.
  • No vendor lock-in on authentication: it is pluggable, so switching providers does not require touching code.
  • Deploy self-hosted or in the cloud, keeping documents on your infrastructure and under your own retention policy, supporting GDPR and other data-residency requirements.
  • Files can be permanently expunged to satisfy retention policy or legal-hold expiry, with an audit record that survives the file itself.
Migrating off a legacy viewer

Retiring a Windows-only document viewer?

Many teams still run document viewing on a legacy commercial SDK tied to a single server. Here is what changes.

Area Legacy viewer Docket
Rendering Fixed 200 DPI raster, blurry past 100% zoom Vector rendering, sharp at any zoom up to 300%
Redaction Overlay annotation that can still be removed Burned permanently into the file
Platform Windows Server and IIS only Windows, Linux, macOS, or Docker
Integration Tied to one client application Embeds in any web or desktop app via postMessage
